Night Scope

Rats are into the feed around the old farmyard: the barn, the silo, the woodpile, the ditch banks and the pond. Clear twenty-five before first light. Every rat has its own habits, the wind picks up once fifteen are down, and a hit sends a body tumbling wherever the impact throws it. Work the bolt after every shot.

Zeroed at 50 m: hold on the body and the bullet lands within a few centimetres from 6 to 60 m. After fifteen rats the wind picks up, so watch the gauge and aim into it on long shots. On a touch screen, drag to aim and tap Fire.

Shooting

• Crosswind drifts the bullet. It stays light until fifteen rats are down, then gusts can push a 60 m shot up to 2 mil. Aim into the wind; the arrow on the gauge shows where it blows across your view.
• The scope is zeroed at 50 m. Closer in the bullet lands up to 3 cm high, and at 60 m about 3 cm low. The ticks under the crosshair are 1 mil each.
• Rats have personalities: sentinels raise the alarm, veterans zig-zag, swimmers dive, skulkers freeze.
• After every shot you work the bolt (about 1.6 s). The next round isn't chambered until it locks, and the rifle needs re-aiming.
• Thermal shows warm bodies anywhere; digital and tube modes need the IR beam to light a rat's eyes.
